Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
PMS, or Premenstrual Syndrome, is a condition that refers to physical and emotional symptoms that occur before or at the beginning of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle. The symptoms may stop when the cycle begins or shortly after. Approximately 75% of women may experience PMS symptoms during their lifetime.
The symptoms of PMS may include:
- Bloating
- Gas
- Irritability
- Frustration
- Anger
- Difficulty sleeping or insomnia
- Anxiety
- Increase or decrease in appetite
- Acne
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Headache
According to Chinese medical theory, PMS symptoms are generally caused by what is called a wood-earth disharmony, or liver-spleen imbalance. The liver channel and spleen channels play a large role in the proper function of the menstrual cycle. When they become unbalanced, PMS symptoms can arise. Treatment involves balancing out the liver and spleen channels by using acupuncture points located on the body, the limbs, and the ear. There are also many Chinese herbal formulas that can be taken to help enhance the effects of the acupuncture.
Using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is a much more gentle approach than common medications and can naturally help balance out your menstrual cycle long term.
